Hidden Gem Destinations in the Midwest You Need to Visit
May 17, 2025
When most people think of travel destinations, the Midwest doesn't always top the list—but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Scattered between the cornfields and Great Lakes are some of the country’s most underrated adventures. If you’re craving road trip vibes, stunning nature, and charming small towns—without the crowds—this one’s for you. And no, we're not talking about Traverse City, Holland, or Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Here are seven hidden gem destinations in the Midwest you absolutely need to visit:
Hidden Gem Destinations in the Midwest You Need to Visit
1. Grand Sable Dunes, Michigan
Nope, these aren't Sleeping Bear Dunes! In fact, they aren't even on the same Great Lake. Tucked away on the eastern edge of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior, the Grand Sable Dunes feel like another world. Towering sand dunes rise dramatically above the turquoise waters of Lake Superior, offering panoramic views and surreal landscapes. They look similar to Sleeping Bear Dunes, except no one ever visits it.
Why it’s a gem: Off-the-beaten-path, often overlooked by those visiting the western side of Pictured Rocks.
2. Put-in-Bay, Ohio
This tiny island on Lake Erie is part quirky beach town, part historic hideaway. Put-in-Bay is perfect for a summer weekend getaway filled with biking, kayaking, and winery hopping. You’ll find colorful cottages, Caribbean-blue water, and a surprisingly fun nightlife scene. There's a reason it's called the Key West of the north!
3. North Shore, Minnesota
Stretching from Duluth to the Canadian border, Minnesota’s North Shore is packed with rugged cliffs, hidden waterfalls, and charming towns like Grand Marais. If you've been to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it has similar northern vibes with tons to do, hike, and explore. The drive itself—along scenic Highway 61—is worth the trip. Don’t miss Split Rock Lighthouse and the trails of Tettegouche State Park.
4. Copper Harbor, Michigan
Wayyyyyy way up on the tip of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula lies a tiny town surrounded by wilderness, history, and epic scenery. In summer, it’s a haven for mountain bikers and paddlers; in fall, it boasts some of the best foliage in the country. There are so many incredible things to do and see here if you're willing to make the long drive.
If you've got extra time, take the ferry and spend a few days on Isle Royale National Park!
5. Beaver Island, Michigan
The largest island in Lake Michigan, Beaver Island is a ferry ride away from Charlevoix—but feels worlds apart. With barely any cell service and endless natural beauty, it’s the perfect place to unplug. Hike, beach hop, or rent a bike to explore the lighthouse-dotted shoreline.
Why it’s a gem: It’s Michigan’s best-kept secret for a slow-paced island escape.
6. Hocking Hills, Ohio
This southeastern Ohio region is full of sandstone caves, gorges, and lush forest trails. The Hocking Hills State Park is home to highlights like Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave—each one more jaw-dropping than the last. It’s especially magical in fall. Beyond the falls and forests, it's also home to some pretty insta-famous cabins. Check out Hocking Hill Treehouse Cabins and book well in advance!
7. Indianapolis, Indiana
Wait—Indy? A hidden gem? Hear us out. This city flies under the radar but delivers with a booming food scene, quirky neighborhoods (like Fountain Square and Mass Ave), cool art installations, and more biking trails than most expect. It also has a series of canals that wind through the city, giving it an extra special charm, especially during the summer months.
