best breweries in Michigan

I've been waiting years to make this post. And before you ask - no this isn't some general, randomly picked list. I've spent the past decade testing and trying breweries around Michigan.

Over the years, I've made note of the best breweries in Michigan, and I finally have made my list. Michigan has broken out as one of the best states for craft beer in the country. Grand Rapids is also known as 'Beer City,' and many other smaller destinations in Michigan have followed in its footpath.  In this exploration of the state's vibrant beer scene, I'll delve into a selection of the finest breweries that showcase Michigan's passion for craft beer.

Best Breweries in Michigan

1. Brewery Vivant

Nestled in the heart of Grand Rapids, Brewery Vivant is a true gem of the Michigan beer scene. Housed in a renovated historic funeral chapel, this Belgian-inspired brewery is all about ambiance and brews. The unique setting of the brewery is really what won me over on my first visit in 2017. From their flagship Farmhand farmhouse ale to their rich and complex barrel-aged offerings, Brewery Vivant's commitment to quality and tradition shines through in every sip. But plan ahead - this brewery is a Grand Rapids favorite! Get there early to avoid a wait.

2. Keweenaw Brewery

Don't sleep on the Upper Peninsula for craft brews! In fact, the region has some of my absolute favorite breweries in Michigan. Known for its iconic Widowmaker black ale and other cold-weather favorites, Keweenaw Brewery captures the spirit of the North with each expertly crafted brew. My recent favorite was their Keweenaw Belle, a blueberry infused wheat. Whether you're enjoying a pint in their cozy taproom or grabbing a six-pack to explore the stunning views of the Keweenaw Peninsula, it's a must-stop on your next drive through the Yoop. Better yet - their pints are cheap! Just last year their pints were a mere $3.50.

3. The Mitten Brewing Company

In Grand Rapids, where craft beer flows like the Grand River, The Mitten Brewing Company stands out as one of my favorites in the city. Housed in a historic firehouse, their lineup features a mix of classic styles and inventive seasonal brews, all served up with a side of hometown pride. But perhaps my favorite part of this Michigan brewery isn't the beer - it's the pizza! So show up hungry and ready for the ultimate combination: pizza & beer.

4. Shorts Brewing Company

No exploration of Michigan's beer scene would be complete without a trip to Shorts Brewing Company in Bellaire. You can find their brews all around the country, not just in Michigan. This pioneering brewery has been pushing the boundaries of craft beer since its founding, delighting drinkers with their bold flavors and whimsical branding. Whether you're sipping on their flagship Soft Parade fruit ale or diving into one of their experimental small-batch brews, Shorts Brewing Company offers an unforgettable tasting experience and is conveniently located in beautiful northern Michigan near Torch Lake!

5. Lansing Brewing Company

I lived in Lansing for five years from 2011 - 2016, and Lansing Brewing Company stands as a testament to the capital city's growing craft beer scene. It opened just before I left the city and was the perfect addition to downtown Lansing! Located in a historic building just steps from the state capitol, this brewery combines old-world charm with modern sensibilities. If possible, visit during the summer when the patio is open and the lawn games are out and ready.

6. Lake Superior Brewing Company

Lake Superior Brewing Company is one of the best breweries in Michigan for many unique reasons. Unlike many of the other breweries on the list that exist in carefully crafted and designed breweries, Lake Superior Brewing is in Grand Marais's local bar. If you aren't looking for the brewery, you'll likely drive by and miss that it even exists. When I covered the best breweries in the Upper Peninsula in 2022, this spot ranked #1 for its unpretentious, laid-back vibe, delicious blueberry wheat ale, and the stunning scenery that is located just down the road:

7. Atwater Brewery

Atwater Brewery has three locations: Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Gross Pointe. I originally tried the Grand Rapids location, but all three offer a unique draw and vastly different styles of taprooms. The Gross Pointe location exists in the old Grace United Church, while the Grand Rapids & Detroit location leans more toward the industrial vibe. No matter which taproom/brewery you decide to visit - you'll understand why people return again and again to Atwater Brewery.

8. Ascension Brewing Company

Located on the outskirts of Metro Detroit in Novi, Ascension Brewing Company is making a name for itself with its innovative approach to craft beer. With a focus on bold flavors and creative ingredients, this brewery pushes the boundaries of traditional brewing to create truly unique and unforgettable beers. Whether you're sipping on one of their barrel-aged stouts or indulging in a decadent pastry ale, Ascension Brewing Company has earned its spot on my list of the best breweries in Michigan. Also - don't forget to try the food! It's equally as delicious.

9. New Holland Brewing Company

Another country-wide favorite is New Holland Brewing Company, which brews the famous 12% Dragon's Milk barrel-aged stout. They have two locations in Grand Rapids and Holland, but I recommend visiting the original location in downtown Holland. This iconic brewery has been a cornerstone of Michigan's craft beer scene for decades, making it a must-stop on a brewery tour of Michigan.

10. North Peak Brewing Company

Travers City is known for its wine, but it also has great beer! With a focus on locally sourced ingredients and sustainable brewing practices, this brewery crafts beer to reflect the pristine beauty of the Great Lakes region right in downtown Traverse City. Whether you're enjoying a crisp, refreshing lager or diving into one of their bold, hop-forward IPAs, North Peak Brewing Company is one of my favorites in the state.

11. Blackrocks Brewing

Heading back to the Upper Peninsula, Blackrocks Brewing in Marquette embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration that defines Michigan's beer scene. With a focus on small-batch brewing and experimental flavors, this brewery delights drinkers with its ever-changing lineup of creative and innovative beers. Whether you're enjoying a pint in their laid-back taproom or enjoying a summer day on their two-story outdoor patio, Blackrocks Brewing is a must-visit when soaking up Northern Michigan summer. The last time I was there I tried the cucumber & lime sour, which I knew would either be a refreshing treat or a horrible life decision. It was delicious! I hope they have it again when I return this summer.

12. Cold Iron Brewing

In the historic town of Ironwood, Cold Iron Brewing is forging a new path in Michigan's craft beer landscape. Ironwood is known to be tough, able to survive some of the harshest winters in the country. Cold Iron Brewery embodies the same toughness and grit of the town, with absolutely delicious stouts and IPAs (and I'm not usually an IPA person - I know, don't hate me).  Whether you're sipping on one of their classic ales or indulging in a bold, barrel-aged stout, Cold Iron Brewing offers a taste of Michigan's wild frontier in every glass. Whenever I drive from Wyoming to Michigan, Cold Iron is my first stop in the state!

13. Ludington Bay Brewing Co.

Rounding out our journey through Michigan's top breweries, Ludington Bay Brewing Co. in the charming town of Ludington offers a taste of lakeside living in every pint. With a focus on traditional brewing methods and locally sourced ingredients, this brewery crafts beers that capture the essence of Michigan's coastal beauty. Whether you're enjoying a crisp, refreshing lager or diving into one of their rich, flavorful stouts, Ludington Bay Brewing Co. offers a taste of Pure Michigan that is not to be missed.

In conclusion, Michigan's craft beer scene is as diverse and dynamic as the state itself, with breweries ranging from historic landmarks to cutting-edge innovators. Whether you're exploring the bustling cities or venturing into the wilderness, there's no shortage of world-class beer to discover in the Great Lakes State. So grab a pint, raise a glass, and toast to the spirit of Michigan craft beer. Cheers!

14. Whiskey Point Brewing Company

Whiskey Point Brewing Company is a hidden gem in Michigan's craft beer landscape, offering a taste of island life and a warm welcome to all who make the journey to Beaver Island, 17 miles off the coast of Charlevoix in Northern Lake Michigan. Named after the historic Whiskey Point Lighthouse that overlooks the island's harbor, Whiskey Point Brewing Company embodies the spirit of Beaver Island in every pint.

Whiskey Point Brewing Company is the ONLY brewery in the United States that is only accessible via boat or plane. So if you're someone who likes checking off unique brewery locations, Whiskey Point should be at the top of your list! Be sure to give them a call before you take the 2.5-hour ferry ride into Lake. Michigan as it occasionally closes for new production!
