In October, a fellow blogger asked me if I had ever been to Hawaii. My response:

"No, and I'm not sure if I ever will. It's just so expensive to fly to such a small island."

Fast forward two weeks and I was clicking submit on for a three week travel plan. My first stop being Oahu, Hawaii.

Travel is so unpredictable. Places I never imagined are suddenly imaginable thanks to a lot of research and killer flight deals.

So last month I began adventuring, touring and discovering Oahu, Hawaii as a solo female traveler.

With no plans and no idea what the island had to offer, I had to start on some research....about two days before I showed up. I sat on the plane on my layover in Phoenix staring at my phone waiting to see if I could sleep on the couch of a friend of a friend my first night. God, I am such an awesome procrastinator. And for having little planned-not even a place to sleep, I have to say things went extremely well.

Solo female travel is extremely intimidating at first. Half of the people you meet will think you are completely insane and the other half with think you are the coolest person alive. Traveling alone opens you to meet amazing new people and to lead you on adventures you never knew existed. It also strips you of all your comfort and forces you to be in situations most would find uncomfortable.

For example: eating alone. Others tell me all the time they feel bad for people at restaurants who sit alone and that in fact they look lonely. With solo travel, be prepared for those "I feel bad for you" stares. But you are not afraid.

I took a tour on the island and was the only single traveler of the group. But I never felt alone. I paired up with some friendly guys from the Philippians and we had a kick-ass time biking the beaches of North Shore, SUPing, Kayaking and just hanging out. Plus everyone else wants to learn your story. Once they find out you're alone it's a flood of questions:

"Aren't you scared being a female and alone?"

"How long are you traveling for?"

"You're not seriously all by yourself...are you?"

But in the end, a majority give you major props. And hell, maybe I am a little crazy...but I like it that way.

So I show up to Hawaii and stayed with some amazing people from, who were more than kind to open their home for me for the first few nights. After that, I just started floating. A hotel here, staying with an old high school friend there. I usually discovered where I was sleeping the day of after being sent on the street with my backpack and no plan. I'll admit it was extremely stressful but extremely fun. I always love to be a little spontaneous. We should all learn to do that a bit more. (Note: make sure you're not traveling there during the Honolulu Marathon, as all hostels will be booked)

I also went on some KILLER hikes. The landscape here is absolutely insane. Jurassic Park meets Lost meets Avatar meets Narnia. All the locals stroll around and I'm there next to them staring up and screaming "BEACHES AND MOUNTAINSSSSSSSSSS".

Hawaii is absolutely one of a kind. The island of Oahu is no longer than 26 miles across, but the ecosystems are completely different based upon the area. The beaches are sunny almost everyday and see about 10 inches of rain per year. Some mountains are actually rain forests that can see up to 400 inches of rain per year with low clouds often lingering.

Did you know 3 of the top 10 rainiest places in the world are located on the islands of Hawaii?

The contrast explains why rainbows are so incredibly common here (At least one a day).

The absolute most difficult and annoying thing I had to deal with while traveling alone in Hawaii was lack of transportation. Unfortunately, I tried renting a car but those dreams were quickly smashed. Locals also told me how risky renting a car is, because if you take it out of the city islanders can spot rental cars and then break into them.

The bus system is quite slow (3 hours to get to the other side of the island) and hitchhiking may be common on the other islands, but Oahu is not the best place. Mopeds are probably the best solution, however that means you must travel light enough to carry everything from place to place on your back. The friend I couchsurfed with the couple days had a moped and we rode that around until we got pulled over by the police for riding two people on a one-seater. Oops.

Overall, I give solo female travel Hawaii 4.8 stars and am definitely returning in the future. I could spend 6 months there and not do every hike I wished. I never felt scared or intimidated and by traveling solo I made dozens of new friends in a matter of 7 days. Not bad, right?

Solo traveling will always lead you to fun and exciting adventures that wouldn't be possible otherwise. You will meet the skeptics who think you will end up on the side of a milk carton. You will meet the people who envy you because they've always wanted to do it. But most importantly it will teach you that the world is not scary and that good people outweigh the bad tremendously.

Hello. This is a great read. I too am an avid solo female traveller and love it – (for the most part). You are dead on with people inflicting their opinions on you at time but heyho each to their own. Hawaii is on my bucket list this year and your blog just got me excited as I love hiking, been trying to research which island to go to so this is great. It is a shame about the transport issue as I like to have easy options to get around independently. How did you find it price wise for accommodation/food etc? Yvonne (Ireland)

    • Shalee on May 5, 2015 at 9:51 PM

      Hi Yvonne,
So sorry for my late reply, this comment must have slipped by me. I always love meeting other women who enjoy traveling solo.

For Hawaii, I found food extremely over-priced. For example, I went out to Mexican one night with another traveler I met and the plate was $17. Ouch! On the North Shore they have food carts that are much more affordable and delicious.

I mostly couchsurfed while I was there, so am unsure on accommodation. Sorry I can’t be more help on that end!

Let me know if you get over there and how it goes! Happy travels!

We should do Hawaii together!! I am a female solo traveler as well and it’s on my bucket list! I am from Rhode Island in the U.S. We should some how make a way where solo travelers can meet each other!

[…] When I flew to Hawaii alone, no one saw the fear in my eyes when I landed. When I was stranded in the airport for days, no one saw my tears. When I was climbing Twin Buttes in Sedona, none of you saw me almost quit for the summit. […]

  3. Alex on May 2, 2015 at 4:13 PM

Did you stay on Oahu for the whole three weeks? I am planning a ten day solo trip in 6 weeks, and have to be in Honolulu for the first four days.

    • Shalee on May 5, 2015 at 9:47 PM

      Hi Alex,
I stayed in Oahu for a week and am already dying to return. Honolulu is great, but I recommend sneaking out to the eastern tide pools and Hanauma Bay. They aren’t far from the city and easily accessible even if you just rent a moped.

I also highly recommend the Palolo Trail located off the northern city neighborhoods.

Have a blast and thanks for reading!

  4. Zen on May 21, 2015 at 2:28 AM

I’m leaving on Thursday and headed to the North Shore. Haven’t booked my room yet. I’m checking out airbnb. Any suggestions on beaches and areas to stay in the North Shore area. I don’t wanna rent a car. How are the buses going that way? Enjoyed reading your travel. I went toPuerto Vallarta solo and had a blast. Travelled the mountains, took tours, took a bus until it ended. I ended up discovering the little town of Yalapa. Great to hear about others getting outside of their comfort zone and enjoying life!

    • Shalee on June 1, 2015 at 11:00 AM

Hope you are having a blast at the North Shore! Sorry I couldn’t reply with a helpful comment sooner, you caught me on my “detox internet” week while in the mountains.

How is it working out? Enjoy some hikes and sunset beach for me! I put the little town of Yalapa on my travel list. I love hearing of places like that.

      Enjoy and thanks for reading!

    • Alex on June 2, 2015 at 8:40 PM

I am going to Oahu next week for ten days. I booked a hostel on the North Shore called Backpacker’s Hawaii. Price is right and the location is great!

      • Lili on January 7, 2016 at 10:02 PM

I’m planning on a short trip to Hawaii myself. I’d just like to know on your experience in the hostel. I’m considering that location as a place to stay. Thanks!

  6. Zana on June 11, 2015 at 1:25 AM

Im heading to Hawaii for 3 weeks in mid november! But i am still a little lost

I am flying into oahu and thinking of staying for 5 days, then flying to the big island for a week and then heading back to Oahu for my birthday! Do you think it is a good idea to just have waikiki as my homebase and try travel around the island?

Im thinking of Waikiki beachside hostel, since i want to meet fellow travellors and just have a good ol solo adventure!

    • Shalee on August 21, 2015 at 11:50 AM

      Hi Zana,
Thanks for the comment! Wakiki is a great home base if you want to be close to the airports to fly to different islands. If you decide you want to spend some time just exploring Oahu, there is an awesome little hostel on the North Shore! It’ll get you away from the expensive-toursity locations :). They also have shark cage diving on the north end, which I didn’t have time to do and am so bummed I missed out on it.

I hope this helps! Have so much fun!!

  7. Juliana on July 14, 2015 at 10:34 AM

Hello! You so totally rock for posting this – you’ve inspired me!

I travel often for work to the west coast (home is NYC) and I decided to embark in a mini adventure to Hawaii for 4 days. I know it’s very little time, but it’s the only time I can manage to squeeze into my busy schedule. I really want to hike, surf and bike and explore nature as much as I can, would you recommend I stay in Oahu? The black sand beach has always been a place I want to visit, but I don’t think Island hoping is an option which such little time.

Thanks again for a great post and look forward to hearing from you!

  8. Sharon on July 26, 2015 at 7:53 PM

This is so awesome!! I’m not the only one out there!!
I plan to go to Hawaii in 3 weeks and am clueless still as to where I will be going, staying, doing!! Any tips on safety would be great. I am a little nervous and feel I will be vunerable as I’m not a seasoned traveler and am going with no set itinerary.

At first I am attending a wedding on the big island at a “resort”, I’m not really a resort type of girl and want to spend more time in more natural and remote places doing things like, surf lessons, hiking (however, I’m a beginner and would want to go with a group for that) Kayaking, etc.

Any tips on safety or activity would be great…..Thanks!! I’ll be there aug 23 -29 (ish)

    Look forward to any comments!!!!

I’m planning to be there Aug end/Sept first week as well. I am going to be traveling by myself as well. Are you going to all islands?

      • Emily on August 28, 2016 at 9:25 PM

        Hi Amu and Sharon,
Hope you both still check this site! I’m currently on Oahu and looking for hiking or adventure buddies?! Would anyone be keen?

    • Shalee on August 21, 2015 at 11:46 AM

      Hi Sharon,
Sorry for the delayed reply! Your trip is just around the corner, eep! That’s so exciting and I’m beyond jealous.

My biggest safety advice is to trust your instincts, but don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and connect with other travelers. Maybe see if they want to do a hike together! I was in your shoes, and can completely understand the nervousness! But once I got there I realized I was overthinking it.

Have a BLAST! And surf some waves for me 🙂

Wonderful post, makes me feel so much more confident about travelling to Oahu on my own in December! I am worried about meeting people though, as there are certain hikes that I would like to do that I won’t be able to do on my own! Is there anywhere that you would recommend to meet people, or even any tips?

I loved this read! I am actually traveling solo, to Hawaii, in less than two weeks! A lot has happened in my life, plans have fallen through, tons of disappointments and sadness. And I thought, hey, something is telling me to do some serious soul searching! So I bought a ticket, found two AirBnB places, and I am now planning how to pack for the trip. I am in my 20’s and thinking, well, lets do this! Your post gives me even more to look forward to. Thank you for posting!

LOL you are soooo right that half of the people you meet will think you are completely insane. 2 years ago I visited Hawaii alone. I was at the end of a relationship and this journey saved me. People really thought that I was crazy. But I met one of best friends now. She was traveling alone , too. Best regards!

  18. SJ on December 23, 2015 at 9:42 AM

    Hi Shalee,

I stumbled across your blog while planning a super last minute solo trip to Hawaii. I guess I’m super excited about solo travel, but also….super nervous. I hope I don’t back out. I am planning on being there starting this Saturday/Sunday and into the New Year. After reading your post, I think I’m going to try to find living arrangements once I get there. Do you think that’s too risky? Or should I just go ahead and book something before I go?

Also, fellow solo travelers, if you see this and are in the area this next week, please let me know!

This is an awesome blog! I’m actually going to Hawaii as a traveling therapist in a couple weeks. I’ll be there for probably 5 months and I don’t know a soul. My supervisor is saying to just find a place to live when I arrive … Nervous and so excited haha. Really stepping out of my comfort zone, considering I live all the way in New York. Any advice about where to live would be great!

    • SJ on February 25, 2016 at 10:53 AM

      Hi Katie,

I am fascinated that you get to travel to Hawaii for your job. What does being a traveling therapist mean and entail? I stayed in Pearl City which is in the center of Oahu and it makes going everywhere so much easier (assuming you have access to a car).

      • Katie on June 29, 2016 at 11:06 AM

        Hey SJ,
Sorry! I just saw this. I just got back from a 6 month travel therapy job in Maui. As a speech pathologist, I am able to take contracted jobs basically anywhere in theUS. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was provided a car and found a place to stay three days after arriving. The company I worked for assisted me. While there, I worked at an elementary school and hopped from island to island:)

    Hi there!

I only visited the Big Island. It was actually very easy to get around. Contact as many couchsurfers as possible! Also start discussions on couchsurfing (in order to find transportation etc.). Below you can find places to see and places to spend the night:

    – Waipio Valley and Waterfalls (Wasabi Tours are very good!):
    – Mauna Kea (try to go with a couchsurfer or other travelers)
    – Volcano park (an organized tour is better than going on your own because the park is pretty big):
    – City of refuge and Two Step beach (next to each other). You need a car or someone who wants to drive you there.
    – Hilo farmers’ market (Wednesday and Saturday): in downtown, next to the bus station
    – Painted church (you need a car or you need someone who can drive you there)
    – Dolphin tour and manta ray tour:

If you don’t have a car, try to meet people in Hostels or on (I didn’t have a car and I managed to get around without a problem).

    Places to stay

    – Koa Wood Hale hostel in Kona: very good, pretty clean, easy way to meet people, 10 min (by foot) away from downtown
    – Hilo Hostel: Hilo is very rainy(!!), not very clean, in downtown Hilo
    – Couchsurfers

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me ([email protected]).

Ps: Everyone told me it was impossible to get around without a car, this is not the case at all! Hawaiians are very very nice and they will give you a ride for sure! Tons and tons of solo travelers in Koa Wood Hale hostel who are looking for a companion. Don’t be shy and ask to join them on a trip :)!

Hi guys, Am also planning a solo trip to Hawaill in April for my birthday. I plan on going 28th to May 2nd and this will be my first solo trip but am also scared. I would really love to meet other solo travelers.

  24. Mathilde on February 1, 2016 at 12:43 PM

Such a cool post! Really inspiring 🙂
I am also going to Hawaii the 27nd of March and I am so excited (and a little nervous). I am going to be there for 3 weeks. Anyone else going to Hawaii at that time?

    • Florencia on April 3, 2016 at 3:15 AM

Hey how long you will stay? I will arrive on the 12th 🙂

  25. Ayse on February 21, 2016 at 3:16 AM

Thanks for the lovely post. I’m going to Oahu on 29th February until 3th and it was very relieving to read your experience. I will be all by myself and kinda excited and worried, mixed up feelings. My main concern is I can’t drive well and I will have to be stuck with tour companies or pay expensive cab fares to get all those amazing hikes or places. I really would love to meet some fellow solo travelers, make new friends, explore the island together and have some fun. Shoot me an email at; [email protected].

I look forward hearing you ladies. Lots of love from Alaska, xoxo

  26. May on March 8, 2016 at 5:40 PM

Hi ladies! I am planning to go on a solo trip as well for my 28th birthday coming up on March 15th.. Anybody else interested in meeting up? Or doing fun stuff together? I want to be there for a week or maybe 2-3 weeks .. It all depends lol! I want to go to Oahu and have signed up for couch surfing, Airbnb, or maybe some hostels! It’s so exciting knowing there are other solo female travelers out there, and I hope I can meet some lovely solo travelers out there 🙂 love this blog by the way! If you ever need a down for whenever travel buddy let me know haha

    • Florencia on April 3, 2016 at 3:14 AM

Hi! Im going there on the 12th! Are you still there? Any advice on where to go and meet other solo travelers?

  27. Maureen on March 18, 2016 at 11:31 PM

Traveled Europe solo in my 20’s and am now at the other end of the spectrum and ready for some new adventures. Will have five days after my son’s graduation in San Francisco in May and decided to go to Hawaii. Heard Oahu is great, but have also been told that Maui is absolutely amazing. Planning on using airbnb or hostels. Any suggestions on which island to go to- would both be pushing it in such a short time?

  28. Linda on March 28, 2016 at 11:31 PM

Hi ladies, I’ll be in Kona, Big Island next week Apr 2-8 (likely travelling solo unless any spontaneous friends want to join me). I have a place and car, but I am looking for hiking and/or diving buddies. Both are safer with buddies. If anyone is interested in meeting up, I’d love to hear from you.

  29. Indy on March 31, 2016 at 3:41 PM

My plans fell through for visiting and staying with a friend, and he moved back to Utah due to a family emergency. So I was going to cancel my flight three days ago, and as I was in the process, just had a thought to just go anyway. I am leaving on Monday April 4th and staying for 10 days
So I am very nervous, only 18. I have never done anything like this before. I hope to stay with a friend at school and wonder about staying in the hostel there at the North Shore. My Dad is very against that and says it will be dangerous. Please advise.

Going to hawaii from april 12 to april 26th. Anyone there?

  31. Zi Ying on April 7, 2016 at 10:38 PM

Hello from Singapore! I am planning to stop by Hawaii for 4-5 days from 27 June to 3 July (tentative dates). This would be my first time travelling as a solo female! Looking for any hiking buddies :)))

    • Katherine Huynh on April 11, 2016 at 10:58 PM

Zi- Let me know when you finalize your dates! I’ll be going solo July 16-19! Would love to meet up and do some hiking!

    Keep going!

    You are an inspiration

Hi Bob! Thank you so much and thanks for reaching out 🙂

  33. Rochelle on May 9, 2016 at 7:25 AM

I am travelling to Oahu on the 27th June to 11th of July. My story is I met a fella online who is coming to australia in 2 weeks for a holiday. From chatting with him I decided to book flights and better yet I’ll be there for 4th of July. This is my first time travelling solo and am particularly nervous about whether to book some accommodation or take the offer of his to stay with him (would be cheaper) but sounds risky for an outsider (and my parents when I tell them haha).

  34. Nina Charlotte on May 18, 2016 at 3:50 PM

    Great article!

I’m planning a solo (or partly solo) trip to Hawaii in September for about 3 weeks after a couple of stressful months, and thinking Oahu, Maui and probably one additional island. I’m a little bit converted about the transportation side of things as I cannot drive, but my hopes are when there’s a will there a way 🙂

If anyone’s planning a trip around the same period, it’d be great to chat and potentially meet up!

    • Katherine on June 15, 2016 at 1:12 PM

This was a great read!! I’m traveling solo first week of September and staying at an airbnb. I’m still skeptical on the hostels bc I’ve heard so many stories of things getting stolen even while you’re sleeping!

    • Bibiana on August 9, 2016 at 4:18 PM

Hi Katherine, I´m planning also a solo trip to hawaii the first week of September! I just decided that one week ago. Which islands are you thinking about?

      • Katherine on August 9, 2016 at 5:32 PM

Hi Bibiana! I’m staying on Oahu for the entirety of my trip. I didn’t even think about the other islands! Maybe next time around. But I didn’t want too many activities on my mind but im planning to visit several different beaches and hike a few trails/waterfalls. I’ve joined some meetup groups in Oahu on the meetup app. Feel free to do the same! If you want to connect, let me know. Hope you have a wonderful trip! 🙂

  39. Karissa on June 23, 2016 at 6:17 PM

I love this article! I am going to Honolulu alone September 4-8th 2016 and am a bit nervous, but mostly excited. I’ve traveled solo here in the US close to home a few times but never without my dog. Sad to say I feel like I might be lonely and because I’m shy, I’m afraid i won’t meet too many people.

How do you branch out and meet new people while traveling solo without feeling awkward?

    Thanks 🙂

    • Katherine on June 29, 2016 at 1:33 PM

I’m thrilled to find this article. I’m a solo traveler and never been to Hawaii. I am also a bit nervous about meeting others or getting very lonely not having anyone to hang with for a week. I do have a friend that lives in Honolulu but they are going to be tied up with work, etc. Will be in O’ahu the 2nd week of October.

  41. Jeannie Galliano on July 5, 2016 at 3:46 AM

Hi all, I have always thought about solo traveling & finally feel comfortable with the idea as I recently traveled to Waikiki with friends for several days & instinctively knew I would return solo. I will be in Maui for about 10 days in mid October & trying to figure out what activities I can enjoy with other solo travelers. I plan to surf every day & do that shark cave diving one of you guys mentioned. I’m excited!!!

  42. Tina on July 11, 2016 at 5:11 PM

I just booked a solo Hawaii trip too. I am staying 5 nights in Honolulu first and want to hike, swim and learn to surf. I need some ideas for my 2 days and 3 nights in Maui. I arrive at 4 pm in Maui on a Thursday and want to do something different. Any recommendations?

  43. Annmarie connolly on July 14, 2016 at 4:07 AM

Hi everyone I’m so excited after reading this …..I’m travelling to hawaii November to 10th for 7 days my first time ever traveling alone. Just got divorced!! Anyone going around that time?? Are the hostels nice?? Thank youuuuu.

    • Charlene on July 29, 2016 at 4:02 AM

      Hi Annemarie!

I will be travelling to Oahu on Aug 5th till 16th. Too bad you’re traveling later. I myself am going thru a divorce so that’s why I am going on this trip to take some time out for myself before the process starts.

I have booked a hostel at The Plumeria in the Waikiki area. I got a private room that cost about $45 a night. Which I think is a pretty good deal. I hope it’s decent. I will let you know once I have stayed there.

Excited to see us women travelling solo!!
We owe it to ourselves to explore!!!

    • Shanti on October 14, 2016 at 9:48 AM

Hi Annemarie! I’ll be in the Big Island Nov. 12-20. This is my first trip to Hawaii. Which island will you be at?

  46. Charlene on July 29, 2016 at 3:58 AM

    Hi! This article is awesome!!!
I just booked a trip to Hawaii solo from Aug 5th till the 16th. I am staying at hostel called The Plumeria with a private room. It soothed my budget without sharing a room with 8 roommates and without spending a fortune on a Hotel 🙂 Plus it’s in the Waikiki area
I am staying all 11 days in Oahu hoping to relax and go on adventures. I have to say i am a bit nervous since I have never travelled alone before, but I am looking to take some time off from what is a difficult time in my life and to beat the crazy insane life of NYC.
I would love to go on many hikes. Does anyone know if this is safe to go on your own?
I came across so many hike trails, some look more doable solo then others.

If any one is heading to this beautiful island during this time….feel free to contact me! I would love to meet some fellow female solo travelers

  47. Vickie on August 5, 2016 at 9:01 PM

I am a newly separated woman in her 50s who has never done anything alone. And I am thinking of traveling solo one day! Just the thought scares the crap out of me but this article is making me really want to do it! I am planning to travel solo to Hawaii in a year or two. I feel like my entire life just opened up to me. I’ve never eaten in a restaurant alone. I have some groundwork to do before I attempt Hawaii, but this article really gives me hope. Thank you!

    • Shalee on August 6, 2016 at 5:30 AM

Glad to hear this, Vickie! Go for it and please update me on your adventures! (first time I ever ate out alone I was truly terrified, but soon realized it actually quite enjoyable) 🙂

    • Maxine on June 21, 2017 at 12:09 AM

      Hi Vickie,
Did you decide to go to Hawaii this year? I’m in the exact same boat and leaving for Oahu for the next 2 months!

  48. Annmarie connolly on August 6, 2016 at 5:32 AM

Hi!! It’s amazing how many of us are in the same boat.. just the idea of eating alone scares me and thrills me at the same time. I keep repro to myself life is for living…x

  49. Sharon on August 30, 2016 at 8:33 AM

    Hi Emily!
I went to HI last year. It was a trip of a lifetime!!

I found an Air B&B in maui and traveled all over. There was a storm so it prevented me exploring the other islands but that has given me a good reason to go back!!
I rented a jeep a had the time of my life! All the the little towns are so beautiful. Did road to Hana and loved it. Even met Mic Fleetwood at his restaurant on the island! You girls buckle up, and go for it!! You will not regret it!! xoxo
My next trip is in October. I’m going to Portland, and renting a car and driving down to So. Ca. Stopping at camp grounds along the way. 🙂

  50. tina on August 30, 2016 at 11:34 AM

I’m spending the first five nights of my October solo trip in Honolulu and want to learn to surf and hope to bike around Oahu and explore too. My hotel is booked on Waikiki beach. But I’m then going to Maui for a three night adventure, arriving in Kahului in the early evening and want to rent a car (or jeep!) and do the drive to Hana the next morning and explore beaches along the way and stay in Hana for the second night in order to seethe sunrise on the top of Halekelea and ride my bike down the volcano. My plan is to make my way to and stay in Wailea for the third night. Any recommendations for a north shore hotel, a Hana hotel and a Wailea hotel?

    • Anne on September 27, 2016 at 9:22 PM

Hi! Ill be traveling solo in Oahu in mid October, 10/14-10/18
I wanted to take Surfing Lessons, beach it, eat food, find yoga classes etc…
Maybe if I get lucky find some locals to make friends with and do night bondfire?
Let me know if you’d n there at the same time!

Such a great blog! I am a single female and am actually moving to Hawaii soon. This post and all of the comments really encouraged me. I’m researching as much as I can before I go but also trying to keep an open mind and stay open to adventure. I’m considering leaving my car behind and getting to know the island in other ways (bike, moped, TheBus, and occasional rental car). It’s a daunting prospect but I know it will be worth it. I would love to connect with any travelers if you come to Oahu!

  64. SJ on January 16, 2017 at 12:02 PM

I am planning spending some solo time in Honolulu area for about 3 days- I know it’s MAD short but that doesn’t mean it can’t be mad fun! I also move pretty fast when travelling alone- I love nature I love relaxing and I love exploring. Those aren’t mutually exclusive, are they? 😉
I will be going in March!

Do you have any suggestions for must-do’s or must-eats? I probably won’t rent a car if it’s a)not very safe and b) not budget friendly and c) The Bus makes more sense, unless car renting does make more sense…I’m open to suggestions.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Natalie! I wish I could remember the name of the tour. But I do remember it was $90 and there was a brochure about it at a tourist info locations. I’d check there!

I went for a few small hikes alone and also found a hiking friend for some. I recommend both! But before hiking alone I always let a friend or family know the hike I’m going on and when for some extra safety. I hope this helps!

  74. Maxine on June 19, 2017 at 11:52 AM

I will be in Oahu for 2 months+ mainly on the North Shore if anyone wants a partner to hike and explore!

    • Maxine on June 19, 2017 at 11:56 AM

This will be my first solo trip ever! A bit of nerves but mostly excitement. What should I expect?

P.S. I’m friendly but on the shyer side so that makes me a bit nervous of meeting new people.

Hi Maxine! Looks like Moneyca just commented saying she was going to be there Aug 11-18th! If you are there during that time 🙂

        Hi Maxine

I visited the Big Island on my own and I had a blast! An easy way to meet people is through Couchsurfing, talking to travelers in hostels (if you rent a car you will find a lot of travelers who would like to take trips together!) and taking one-day trips (there are a lot of awesome tours you can book). I met a lot of cool people and it was one of the best experiences in my life! I highly recommend going alone. I was also quite nervous about talking to people, that’s why I used couchsurfing to meet travelers, it makes talking to new people less intimidating. Have fun :D.

        • Shalee on June 21, 2017 at 7:34 AM

Oh yes, I agree with this! Couchsurfing 100%. Even if you don’t stay with anyone there should be couchsurfing meet ups in the area.

          Thank you so much!

    Hi Shalee,
What do you recommend to meet other travelers? I’m not too outgoing but friendly.

    • Shalee on June 21, 2017 at 7:33 AM

Hi Maxine! I would really recommend taking a small tour somewhere. I’m not usually a tour person, but I took a small bus tour to the North Shore for $99. There was only about ten of us, but we all became pretty close and I didn’t even feel like I was solo traveling for that day. I randomly met a few other travelers on the beach, too. Where are you staying for those two months? I’m sure you’ll be able to meet a lot of people! Hawaii I found to be extremely hospitable.

      Hope this helps! 🙂

Thank you Shalee! I will do that. You and your blog have been so inspiring.
